understand and support tribal treay rights

November is National Native American Heritage Month. It is an opportunity to commit to learn about the history, culture, and contributions and pay tribute to the rich ancestry and tradition of Tribal Nations.  all the difference.

Take time to learn about treaty rights. The treaties signed by the US government and Northwest tribes in the 1850s established critical protections for salmon and for people. These protections include salmon’s access to high-quality habitat for spawning and guaranteeing these sovereign Nations the right to fish for salmon at their usual and accustomed fishing grounds. By pushing salmon to the brink of extinction, we have not lived up to the promises of those treaties. Supporting tribal treaty rights means understanding the cultural relevance of salmon to tribes. Greater access to habitat means more salmon for everyone.
