Festival of the st̓əč̓as
Aug

10:00 AM10:00

Festival of the st̓əč̓as

At the Festival of the st̓əč̓as (steh-chass), we are thrilled to celebrate the cultural & ecological restoration of the Deschutes Estuary and the upcoming removal of the 5th Avenue Dam. We are also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Judge Boldt Decision, which reaffirms Washington state Tribal treaty rights by securing an equal share of salmon and co-management of this and other vital resources.

st̓əč̓as refers to both the landscape and the original inhabitants of the Deschutes Estuary & Budd Inlet. The st̓əč̓as cultural legacy was interrupted by colonial actions like damming the Deschutes River & and the persecution of Squaxin people, who were forcibly removed from access to critical food/medicinal sources of the st̓əč̓as & beyond. Regional indigenous leaders like Billy Frank Jr. were part of a resistance that led to The Fish Wars of the 60’s and 70’s. The 5th Ave dam was a notable site for fish-in demonstrations.

This event is free to the public. Please visit the festival web page for event details (music, workshops, speaker, vendors, etc.)

We Are Puget Sound Short Film featured in the Foundation's Grassroots Film Fest in film festival!

WEC and Braided River are excited that our #WeArePugetSound short film featuring Tahmina Martelly's efforts to rip up unused pavement and plant food gardens is included in the Healthy Land Healthy Communities track. As the manager of Resiliency Programs, she envisioned and led an innovative effort with asylees, immigrants, and refugees to tear up an unused hillside parking lot and replace it with food gardens and a rain-collection system – diverting many thousands of gallons of polluted storm runoff before it could reach the Duwamish River and Elliott Bay on Puget Sound. Don’t miss this inspirational video of Tahmina’s work, passion, and dedication to serving her community.

Please take a moment to visit The Grassroots Film festival website for more information.

Thank you, Rose Foundation, for such a wonderful line-up of inspiring films!
